The canal and towpath should be seen in the context of a linear corridor which offers health and recreation benefits to people living and working nearby, it also has a substantial ecological value, contributes to the green infrastructure provisdion in the District and is an important historic landscape feature, providing a pleasant setting for development. As a sustainable, traffic-free route for walkers and cyclists, it can contribute positively towards the achievement of sustainable development by offering an alternative to car-based journeys.
