Canal towpaths are a particularly valuable facility for informal recreational use, as well as offering a quiet and pleasant environment for walkers and cyclists which is traffic-free. The canal and towpath is a form of open space that can perform a range of functions such as: strategic links between areas, important wildlife corridors, a recreational and sport resource, access to the countryside, accessible amenity in urban areas, visual amenity and a community resource.
