The towpath in the District primarily passes through rural and semi-rural areas, and is a valuable recreational/leisure resource for walkers and cyclists, can also be a sustainable route for accessing facilities and services and along with the canal itself, provides a wildlife habitat, including a means of linking other wildlife habitats, thus assisting in the movement and migration of wildlife.
